What RD Jobs Make the Most Money?

by | May 3, 2021

As an RD or RD2Be, you may have heard that dietitians don’t make much money.  However, the great thing about becoming a Registered Dietitian is that there IS opportunity to have a great paying salary! In this article today, we are talking about the highest paying jobs in the RD career path. But before we get to the highest paying RD job opportunities, first, allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Tony Stephan, and I’m a dietitian business coach. I help RDs make more IMPACT and more INCOME through nutrition coaching. However, before becoming a dietitian business coach, I was an RD nutrition coach. I served thousands of nutrition coaching clients over a time span of 12 years. My successful nutrition coaching business is what led me to where I am today. Now without further ado, let’s talk about the highest paying RD job opportunities.

What Is The Average Pay For RD Jobs?

Before we start talking about the highest paying RD jobs out on the market, let’s first talk about what the average RD pay looks like. On average, an RD makes around $61,033 each year, according to glassdoor.com. The good news for RDs and RD2BEs is that the job outlook is expected to increase for RDs in the next 10 years. So the future is looking bright for RDs and RD2BEs. Now let’s talk about the highest paying RD jobs on the market.

What Are The Highest Paying RD Jobs?

Online Coaching/Private Practice ($100,000+ annually)

Perhaps the best thing about online nutrition coaching is, unlike other RD jobs, your salary will not be stuck at the same number.  Being an online dietitian nutrition coach in your own private practice is commission based meaning that the more clients you have, the more you get paid. With online nutrition coaching, there is an opportunity to make well above the average pay of an RD. The beauty of having your own private practice is that there is no cap on what you can make, and you can make it your own.

Have you always wanted to work in the intuitive eating space? Go for it! Have you always wanted to help people lose weight? Do it! The great thing about working in your own private practice is that you can work with the clients that you want to work with while making the amount of money that you want to make! The sky’s the limit when you become an entrepreneur. In our Dietitian Nutrition Coaching Certification, we teach RDs how to set themselves up for success in their own RD Private Practice. Eating Disorder Dietitian ($81,900 – $210,900 annually)

What does an eating disorder dietitian do? An eating disorder dietitian works with a team of medical professionals, including a medical doctor, psychiatrist, therapist, and family members, to aid in eating disorder treatment. You will likely see an eating disorder dietitian in either a clinical setting or an outpatient setting. The great news is that if you have an advanced degree, you could possibly make even more money beyond the typical salary range for eating disorder RDs. If you have a passion for making a positive difference in the eating disorder space, then becoming an eating disorder dietitian could be the route for you!

Coaching Counseling Dietitian  ($104,00 – $162,240 annually)

A coaching counseling dietitian is similar to being a private practice dietitian. However, instead of doing nutrition coaching for your own business, you are doing nutrition coaching for a corporate entity. There are many companies that hire RDs for both in-person and online counseling. Companies you could work for as a coaching counseling dietitian are medical consulting firms, corporate wellness companies, online apps, and more. If you’re interested in nutrition coaching but don’t want to start your own business, becoming a coaching counseling dietitian could be the right path for you.

Director of Nutrition ($125,879 – $156,829 annually)

Directors of nutrition generally serve in a management position where they may manage employees, work with outside vendors, develop and leverage relationships with other government agencies, and maintain existing processes, procedures, contracts, and programs. If you’re interested in working more on the business side of dietetics, becoming a director of nutrition could be the career path for you.

Bottom Line For Highest Paying RD Jobs

As an RD or RD2BE, it can be discouraging at first to hear that RD jobs typically aren’t high paying. But the good news is that there are good-paying RD jobs out there that pay well above the average dietitian pay.

If you’re looking to become an entrepreneur and start your own nutrition coaching side hustle, you’re in the right place. I’m proud to be a part of the movement of dietitian entrepreneurs who are making more IMPACT and more INCOME! In the Dietitian Nutrition Coaching Certification, we teach our students how to set their dietitian nutrition coaching business up for success.
